Mitch's Media Musings - July 2024

Mitch's Media Musings

June 16 - July 15, 2024

General

Cox media stations had some layoffs nationwide. Tim Bryant, the News Director at WGAU in Athens, was one of them.

Atlanta Business Chronicle - Dean Anason is the new Managing Editor. He was with American Banker for about 15 years, and previously covered healthcare for the Chronicle. He's an Emory grad, which gives him extra gravitas, of course!

Atlanta Pickleball magazine - We've added this new publication to the Leff's Atlanta Media database. Arlinda Broady is the lead writer.

Chamblee City Lifestyle - We've added this publication to the Leff's Atlanta Media database.

(The) Daily Vine - We've added this new local media news site to the Leff's Atlanta Media database. It's focused on Cherokee County.

Decaturish - Publisher Dan Whisenhunt announces that he's selling Decaturish to Appen Media Group. He says "Zoe Seiler and I aren't going anywhere, and neither is Decaturish. We will keep our same jobs and remain in our current roles. Also, short term, all our coverage will remain the same. We plan to expand our coverage as part of this and will restructure our beats in the coming months to make what we do more effective and cost-efficient. More to come on that in the days and weeks ahead."

Georgia Public Broadcasting

  • GPB's "Morning Edition" has added a recurring segment in collaboration with Georgia Trend each month. This month, the segment explores Douglas County.

Neighbor Newspapers - An update for those of you who work with the Neighbor Papers.

  • Their focus currently is South Fulton County, the city of Atlanta, Buckhead and Sandy Springs. They're not covering DeKalb at all.

  • The new Fulton County Neighbor covers that county. Reporter Alex Amos is covering South Fulton topics, with Rachel Kellogg in the role of Fulton Bureau Chief.

  • Skyler Heath edits the Northside Neighbor as well as Cobb Life magazine.

Newton County Journal - We've added sports writer Evan Washington to the Leff's Atlanta Media database

NRI Pulse - We've added this Atlanta-based news outlet to the Leff's Atlanta Media database. They cover topics of interest to the Indian community in Georgia and across the country.

WABE Radio - New programming coming from WABE. I'm hijacking this info from Derek Prall at Saporta Report. (He did such a nice job writing it up. Why should I try to make it better?). Click here for all the details. Derek says "new shows premiering this summer and fall on WABE TV include:"

  • Closer Look Coffee Conversations. Rose Scott takes her popular weekday civic affairs radio show into the community to hear the issues that matter most to Atlanta neighborhoods.

  • Black In The Garden. At the intersection of horticulture and Black culture, host Colah B Tawkin brings her acclaimed podcast, exploring issues impacting Black communities and Mother Earth, to video.

  • Montgomery & Company. WNBA Champion and part-owner of the Atlanta Dream, Renee Montgomery, is coming to WABE TV to discuss family, sports, culture, and fun with guests across sports, business, and entertainment.

  • WABE Time Capsule. A collection of shows from 40 years of WABE’s archives, capturing snapshots of Atlanta’s recent history, neighborhoods, issues, and culture.

  • Saving the Chattahoochee. A film by Atlanta filmmaker Hal Jacobs chronicling the story of the Atlanta women who defended the Chattahoochee River over five decades.

  • No Ordinary Life. Atlanta documentarian Heather O’Neill celebrates the careers and courage of five pioneering female photojournalists who braved the frontlines of war.

  • WABE Night at the Arts. A weekly series featuring performances and behind-the-scenes content from Atlanta’s cultural institutions.

WSB Radio

  • Congrats to reporter Sabrina Cupit who received The Gracie Award for talk radio.

WXIA

  • Denisha Thomas has been named News Director, overseeing 11Alive’s daily newsgathering operations. She starts her new role on July 22. Thomas is currently news director for TEGNA station WATN-TV/ABC24 in her hometown of Memphis.

  • Former 11Alive reporter Jeremy Campbell is the new Senior News Director for Spectrum News in Texas. He's working with stations in Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio.
